Happy Cinco de Mayo everybody! Does anyone have a fiesta planned? I bet I know what’s on the agenda for tonight, taco’s, corona and margarita’s…am I right? Want to make the most of your margarita’s? Check out or Thirsty Thursday Margarita post. If not, I have some other options for you today.
While it might be easy to fall back on the simple mexican drinks we know and love, why not try some new ones? There are lots of authentic mexican cocktails, and some unique ways to make them. Try out one or two of these this year and plan on having a new drink for next year!
Michelada
A michelada is a traditonal mexican drink that is similar to a bloody mary. Instead of a vodka base like bloody mary’s, this has a cerveza base. Get the full recipe Leite’s Culinaria.
Sangria
Who doesn’t love a sangria on a warm spring day? A great recipe for Cinco de Mayo as it uses spanish red wine and tequila.
Horchata
While you can buy horchata, it is pretty simple to make too. I love the recipe from sin-min.com because it has some very surprising ingredients!
Chili Oil Paloma
A paloma, another traditional mexican drink, combines tequila and grapefruit juice. Sounds refreshing right? Well step it up a notch and add some spice. If you like lemon cayenne water, you will like this chili oil paloma recipe from Totalwine.
Mezcal
Mezcal is like tequila, but derived from agave. So there are lots of ways to make it unique. I love this one from Louise Roe’s blog because like the recipe above, it is sweet and spicy.
Mezcal Old Fashioned
I had to add another mezcal recipe because this one looked good too! Like a mexican old fashioned, it combines mezcal and tequila. If you drink this, you know how to party.
Pineapple Tepache
Last but not least, another mexican cocktail, the Tepache. It’s a fermented drink, so it’s a great probiotic. But that also give it a bubbly taste. No alcohol needed, but adding it won’t hurt. Get this recipe at Fermented Food Lab.
